Mais aussi perspicaces soient-ils, ils semblent bien désarmés pour faire face à un tueur particulièrement retors, que ses connaissances médico-légales semblent mettre à l’abri de toute identification. Des victimes retrouvées carbonisées dans leur voiture, un lien tellement ténu avec leur meurtrier qu’il est difficile à établir de prime abord, un schéma psychologique (et psychopathique, n’ayons pas peur des mots ;-)) qui ne prend forme aux yeux de Tony Hill que grâce à la répétition des crimes… Un véritable écueil pour une « dream team » que ses détracteurs attendent au tournant. D’autant plus que Carol vit toujours avec les douloureuses séquelles de ses erreurs passées et que la journaliste Penny Burgess n’a pas l’intention de laisser passer un scoop de cette envergure…« Insidious Intent » est un roman policier du genre « serial killer » qui se focalise non pas sur l’identité du meurtrier -que nous connaissons très vite- mais plutôt sur la manière dont il pourra être confondu malgré la prudence dont il fait preuve. Rien de bien révolutionnaire mais le livre se lit avec grand plaisir et la fin est quant à elle audacieuse, au point que l’auteure elle-même demande de ne pas la spoiler. J’ai pu lire çà et là que cette fin était controversée voire peu imaginative mais personnellement, j’ai bien aimé l’effet de surprise et j’ai hâte de voir la suite qui lui sera réservée. Je pense qu’après dix romans mettant en scène les mêmes personnages (du genre torturés, en plus), le risque d’essoufflement est réel et que Mrs McDermid s’en sort plutôt bien en choisissant ce virage.Peut-être pas le meilleur McDermid (mais il faut dire qu'elle a placé la barre très haut) mais en tout cas suffisamment bien ficelé pour vous procurer un bon moment de détente... et vous faire passer toute envie d'assister seule à une fête de mariage ;-)
